Essential Oil 101

Everything you need to know about essential oils

One thing I love about today's world is that health and wellbeing are so hot right now. I've always been interested in healthy living and natural therapies, and I love that green juices, chia seeds, yoga and essential oils have all become pretty mainstream.

I've always had a little collection of essential oils in my home, but about 3 years ago I was introduced to doTERRA's pure therapeutic grade oils, and since then I've never looked back. I now use them daily to support my family's health, and have even built my Earth Mama Aromatherapy business around them.

Some of you would be all over essential oils too, but I'm sure others are scratching their heads and wondering: What's all the hype?

So let's start with the basics.

1. What is an essential oil?

Essential oils are compounds extracted from plants, either through steam distillation or the cold press method. They can be created from many different parts of a plant, such as the leaves, flowers, roots, stems, fruit and bark. The oil captures the plant's 'essence'.

2. How do they work?

In capturing the plant's essence, essential oils also capture the plant's protective properties. When we use essential oils aromatically (by breathing in their scent), the molecules travel through the nasal passage and directly into the brain, where they can have a direct impact on our mood and emotions.

From here, the molecules enter our bloodstream and begin to travel through the body, helping to effect us on a physical level. Research shows that within 20 minutes of inhaling an essential oil, the molecules can be found in every cell of the human body... How amazing is that!

Essential oils can also be applied topically to the skin, to have the same emotional and physical impacts on our health.

3. What can I use them for?

Ask any essential oil devotee and they'll tell you that there is literally an oil for every imbalance. Some of the main ailments that oils can be used for are listed below. Click the links if you wish to find out more.

Along with these ailments, essential oils can also be used in natural skincare and cleaning products; their uses really are endless.
